University of Texas School of Dentistry dental, dental hygiene and advanced education students presented 40 projects at the 2012 Student Table Clinic Presentations held at the school March 9 in advance of the Greater Houston Dental Society’s Star of the South Dental Meeting.

The presentations featured research, new products, case studies and more. Sponsors included Henry Schien; Komet USA, LLC; the U.S. Army; Zimmer Dental and the UTSD Alumni Association.

The Houston Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) chose a first-place winner from among the research projects.  Dental student Jireh Yue was honored for “Alveolar Bone Stem Cells: An Isolation Characterization and Differentiation Approach.”  His sponsor was Dr. Isabel Gay.

The Table Clinic coordinator, Assistant Professor Stephen Laman, DDS, said the annual event gives students a chance to present their work to faculty members for immediate feedback. The students volunteer to participate and do the work in their spare time, despite challenging schedules.

“I’m overwhelmed with how talented and dedicated these students are,” Laman said. “They work very long hours and yet still find time to participate in this event.”

A complete list of the projects and participants follows.

The Houston Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) recently named Dianna McGookey Milewicz, MD, PhD, as 2011 Speaker of the Year. She was chosen because of her outstanding accomplishments and contributions to patient care, education and research -- which have brought world recognition to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), said AADR Houston Section President Sudarat Kiat-amnuay, DDS, MS.

Milewicz is a professor and director of the Division of Medical Genetics at UT Medical School at Houston, where she holds the President George Bush Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine. She is director of the MD/PhD Program and is a Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist.

Author of more than 200 publications in the medical literature, Milewicz is a successful researcher, with current grant funding of more than $16 million and a funding history of more than $38 million. She is especially dedicated to preventing death from thoracic aortic aneurysm – the medical condition that killed actor John Ritter. Milewicz is head of the John Ritter Research Program in Aortic and Vascular Diseases at UTHealth.

She is board-certified in both internal medicine and medical genetics and was a summa cum laude graduate of Rice University in Houston. She went on to earn an MD and PhD in cell biology at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.
