Mission

January 10, 2014

In keeping with the vision of the School of Dentistry and with The University of Texas Health Science Center, it is the mission of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene to be recognized locally, nationally and internationally for innovative and contemporary didactic and clinical education curricula, cutting-edge research and scholarly activity, compassionate patient care and service to the school and the community.

We aspire to be the model program for the 21st century, dedicated to advancing the health of the people of Texas, the nation and our global community. We will do this by educating compassionate health care professionals and innovative scientists, and through discovering and translating advances in the social and biomedical sciences to treat, cure and prevent disease now and in the future.

In pursuit of excellence, the Department will focus educational energies on students and patients, teaching the basic and clinical sciences along with professional and ethical standards in an environment of collegiality, respect for diversity and attention to our foundation principles.

Goals:

  1. Recruit well qualified, diverse students and educate them to be qualified oral health care professionals in their chosen field by preparing them for future practice in a highly-technological world-amid a population that is again, ethnically diverse and consumer-oriented.
  2. Graduate clinically competent students who can provide comprehensive patient care.
  3. Educate students to provide patient care in adherence to guidelines of the comprehensive quality assurance and risk management program.
  4. Provide service learning, research and community outreach experiences that enrich students’ professional development and reinforce their clinical education.
