Preceptorship in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

6 months and 12 months (One Year) Programs

The preceptorship program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is offered in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Science. The program is aimed at dentists who have attained significant level of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology training/experience in institutions outside the United States, and who wish to improve/sharpen their oral and maxillofacial pathology/histopathology diagnostic skills. Currently, the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences does not offer a residency training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Therefore, the preceptorship program does not represent a component of a residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, or of any other speciality at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.

The objective of the program is to enhance diagnostic histopathology skills as well as clinical, radiographic and histopathology correlation skills. In addition, those opting for the 12 month (one year) program will be encouraged to complete a short term research project on a subject relevant to Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. It is anticipated that the level of competence of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology preceptors who successfully complete the program will be such that they will become capable of providing independent diagnostic service at levels approximating that which usually obtains in established centers. The program curriculum does not involve direct patient contact and/ or care.

Acceptance into the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology preceptorship program does not in any way guarantee acceptance to the graduate residency programs. Individuals will be required to apply to the graduate residency programs through normal mechanisms.

The preceptorship programs at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston do not award academic credit. Upon completion of the program individuals will receive a letter of completion.

The program is administered by the Office of Continuing Education. For more information, contact the CE office at 713 486 4028, by fax at 713 486 4037, or by email at utsdcontinuinged@uth.tmc.edu.
