To celebrate her graduation from dental school, Dr. Robin Weltman’s husband surprised her with a curious present – a baby grand piano. She had taken clarinet lessons when she was younger, loved music and had long wanted to learn to play the piano.
Twenty-five years later, that’s still her goal, but she’ll have to learn on a different piano because the Schafer & Sons baby grand that stood in her living room since 1987 now graces the lobby of the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley DDS University Life Center. Read more
Four major gifts to The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston totaling $360,000 will fund two new scholarships, a new endowed professorship and enhancements to the Alumni Circle on the fourth floor. The donors include Tan V. Vu, DDS; Michael Schwinn, DDS; Professor John M. Powers, PhD, and his wife, Susan M. Powers, PharmD; and Associate Professor Emeritus Leslie O. Fullerton, DDS, MS, and his wife, UTSD Alumni Association Executive Director Tricia Fullerton.
With UTSD poised for major advances, these gifts from committed alumni and faculty of the school come at a crucial time, said John A. Valenza, DDS, dean of the School of Dentistry. Read more
An additional refrigerator and three microwave ovens have been added to the Student Lounge on the third floor of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, thanks to the help of the UTSD Family & Friends Association.
A large double-door refrigerator and the microwaves were installed this month, with the association defraying part of the $5,000 price tag for the appliances.
The lounge was already equipped with two refrigerators and four microwaves, but that was insufficient for the hundreds of students who work long days at the school and bring their lunches, said Phil Pierpont, DDS, associate dean for student and alumni affairs. Read more
Three couples have pitched in to create a new endowed professorship at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston this year.
The Doan-Huynh-Le Professorship in General Dentistry is the first endowed professorship in the Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health and was awarded to department Chair Richard "Rick" Bebermeyer, DDS, a 29-year UTSD faculty veteran.
The contributors include Anthony Doan, DDS '97, and his wife, Kim-Loan Nguyen, DDS '96; Alex Huynh, DDS '91, and his wife Kim Loan Nguyen, DDS '96 (though the wives’ names are similar, they are not related); and Don Le, DDS, and wife Cindy Le, PhD. Read more
