UTSD Scores Big at Star of the South Table Clinics

Students, residents and alumni of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston won multiple awards in Scientific Table Clinics at the 2014 Star of the South Dental Convention March 27 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, including the Edward J. Cooksey Award and the Dentsply SCADA Award — the event’s top honors.  

Dr. Mamatha Yadlapati won the Cooksey Award for “LPS-Induced Cytokine Production in Human Periodontal Ligament Cells.” Her sponsors were Drs. Renato Silva and Ariadne Letra.  First-year dental student Glennis Katzmark, sponsored by Dr. Dharini van der Hoeven, won the SCADA Award, which is
granted to the winners of U.S. dental school research competitions co-sponsored by the American Dental Association and Dentsply North America. Read more

 

UTSD Students Take Top Awards at GHDHS Table Clinics

The Greater Houston Dental Hygienists’ Society sponsored its annual Student Table Clinics April 8 at the Norris Conference Center in Houston. Approximately 50 dental hygiene students from The University of Texas School of Dentistry and Houston Community College – Coleman College of Health Sciences participated.

With 15 table clinics competing, UTSD students won first, second and third place and took home prizes of $150 for first place, $100 for second and $75 for third. The winners are: Read more

 

Dental Student Presents Research at National Meeting

Third-year dental student Arsene Hanana explains his research poster at the American Student Dental Association’s annual meeting. 

Arsene Hanana, a third-year dental student from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, was chosen from hundreds of applicants nationwide to present a research poster at the American Student Dental Association’s annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif. earlier this year.  

Hanana presented “CD8aa++ Dendritic Cell on Down Regulation of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Inflammation,” based on his work with a special type of dendritic cell recently discovered by UTSD Professor Yahuan Lou, PhD, and others in collaboration with Professor Nadarajah Vigneswaran, BDS, DrMedDent, DMD, both of the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences.  Read more

Four members of the Hispanic Student Dental Association — Anale Dovalina, Nina Pham, Angela Wan and Kimberly Paz — took part in the Mount Canaan Missionary Baptist Church Health Fair on April 5.  The four are first-year dental hygiene students at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. Read more
