UTHealth Dentistry Greenspoint Now Open

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry and Texas Children’s Health Plan have joined forces to add dental care to services offered at The Center for Children and Women in the Greenspoint area of Houston.

Occupying 3,000 square feet inside the 50,000-square-foot facility at 700 N. Sam Houston Parkway West, “UTHealth Dentistry Greenspoint” is now open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with plans to expand to some evenings and Saturdays. 

Unlike other services at The Center for Children and Women, the dental clinic will accept patients of all ages, male or female, including those with private insurance or paying cash.  Call 832-828-1446 for dental appointments. Read more

 

Faculty Campaign Seeks Scholarships for Students

Faculty members at Houston’s health university hold a unique responsibility to go beyond simply educating students:  The UTHealth mission also requires us to model best practices in clinical care and public health.  As an additional way to support UTHealth students, the 2014 Faculty Campaign for Students is now raising funds to increase student scholarships, and faculty of the School of Dentistry are invited to participate.

The theme for this year’s campaign is “The Best Ideas Come from Within.”  Read more

Alisa Dill, a second-year dental student at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, is the recipient of the Bouquot-to-Go Student Award for Innovation in Research.

She was selected by the Houston Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) for her research presentation, “IL1B  Polymorphisms and Periapical Lesion Development in Individuals with Caries.” Her faculty sponsor is Renato Silva, DDS, MS, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Endodontics. The manuscript has been submitted for publication in the Journal of Endodontics. Read more

 

ASDA Volunteers Screen Bhutanese Refugees

Fifteen members of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston participated in a multidisciplinary health fair Feb. 22 at The Alliance for Multicultural Community Services in Bellaire, where they performed dental screenings and taught oral hygiene instructions to 96 Bhutanese refugees of all ages who recently emigrated to the Houston area.
 
The students, working under direction of Assistant Professor Ana Neumann, DDS, PhD, included Brian Patterson, Adrien Lewis, Andrea Sauerwein, David Stonestreet, Diane Reyes, Hieu Pham, Min Cho, Matt Franzen, Jeema Dad, Clara Yoo, Kelsey Edmondson, Shivani Patel, Shamsha Ali and Veronica Cordon. Read more

Dental hygiene students from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston have been going out into the community to teach oral health and share information about the School of Dentistry’s services. 

On April 3, dental hygiene students An-Chih “Angela” Wan, Tan Ngo and James Sun took part in a health fair at Ridgecrest Elementary School in Spring Branch ISD, and in March, first-year dental hygiene students Denise Murray, Heather Ellis and Skyler Jones attended the Second Annual Family First Health Fair at Booker T. Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity students from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston were invited back to the Windsor Kingdom Builders Church April 6 to participate in the Men's Heart and Health Weekend Event.

Under the direction of Associate Professor June Sadowsky, DDS, MPH, the Alpha Omega students provided oral health screenings and hygiene instruction for 20 patients. Read more
