Valenza, DDS, invites all School of Dentistry faculty, staff, students and residents to enjoy a free barbecue lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, March 10 in the Cooley Center patio and lobby. Western attire is encouraged.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™, set for March 4-23, has been an annual event for more than 80 years, with approximately 27,000 volunteers contributing time, resources and talent to stage the world's largest livestock exhibition, the world's richest regular-season rodeo, and the Southwest's premier entertainment event.  Read more

March 5 Is the Day to Drop the ‘R-Word’

Drop the R-Word on March 5

UTSD students are supporting a national effort to end use of hurtful lanquage.

Students at The University of Texas School of Dentistry are supporting a growing national effort to stop use of the “R-word.”  Wednesday, March 5 is national “Spread the Word to End the Word Day,” and the students will set up a table outside the Fullerton Classroom (4310) to share information about ways you can help.

“We’d love for you to stop by our table and take the pledge to end the use of this hurtful word,” said Jenni Griffith, president of the DDS Class of 2016. “The table will be set up all day, and there will be people there during lunch time to answer any questions you may have.”

The effort gained local momentum when MHMRA, the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County, recently announced that it will change its name this year to exclude what has become a derogatory term. The agency has hired a brand consulting firm but also seeks the public’s help.  Read more

Donations Needed for March 13 TAWD Silent Auction

A woman holding up fingers to indicate silence.

Don't keep silent about the need for donations for the TAWD Silent Auction March 13 at UT School of Dentistry.

Donations are being collected now for the 16th Annual Silent Auction benefitting TAWD, the Texas Association of Women Dentists. The event will be held Thursday, March 13 outside the Fullerton Classroom (4310) at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. Past donations have included gift cards, gift baskets, paintings, jewelry, services, etc., but organizers say the options are endless.

This year, the auction proceeds will benefit both TAWD and the Mina Rosenthal-Eames Fund, which was created in memory of a UT School of Dentistry student who was a victim of domestic violence. The fund provides means for women and children who have been victims of domestic abuse to receive needed dental care they might not be able to get otherwise.  Read more
