Alpha Omega Volunteers Help at Health Fair

In the midst of final exams, five University of Texas School of Dentistry students and two faculty members donated a Sunday afternoon to screen patients at the Kingdom Builder’s Church Health Fair in early December as a community service activity for the Beta Eta Chapter of Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity.
 
Dental students Austin Anderson, Nicholas Ayoade, Justin Tullis, Gregory Luk and Chad Fruithandler worked with Alpha Omega faculty sponsors June Sadowsky, DDS, MPH, and Paul Levine, DDS, to provide oral health screenings and oral hygiene instructions at the Kingdom Builder’s Church Health Fair. Read more

 

Dr. Stimson, Former Faculty Member, Honored for Forensic Odontology

Professor Emeritus Paul G. Stimson, DDS, MS, who taught general, maxillofacial and oral pathology and forensic dentistry for 32 years at The University of Texas School of Dentistry, has been named “Diplomate Emeritus” of the American Board of Forensic Odontology (ABFO). 

He received the honor upon retiring after 47 years of teaching, research and board service to the ABFO, the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the American Society of Forensic Odontology.  Most recently, Stimson was senior forensic dental consultant with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.  Read more

 

Nine From UTSD Promoted for 2013-14

Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, announced that nine faculty members were promoted at the beginning of 2013-14.

The Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health had the most members promoted (four), followed by the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene (two). One person was promoted in each of the departments of Orthodontics, Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences, and Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics.  No petitions for tenure were granted, and there were no staff promotions. Craven Scholarship Awarded to Second-Year Student

The Judith L. Craven, MD, MPH, and Mortiz V. Craven, DDS Scholarship has been awarded to Terrall Thurman, a second-year dental student at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.  

The scholarship was established with a $100,000 gift in honor of former UT System Regent Judith L. Craven, MD, to support scholarships for one or more male African-American students at UT School of Dentistry. Her husband, Moritz Craven, DDS, is a 1960 graduate of UTSD.

The one-time donation was made in Craven’s name by Compaq Computer Corp., in recognition of her service on Compaq’s board of directors, which she joined in December 1998. Read more
