Student's Bobblehead Idea Winds Up in 2012 Time Capsule

When the School of Dentistry awarded prizes to 16 students and employees last fall for their suggestions as to what to put in the school’s 2012 Time Capsule, dental student Adam Grimm was the only one to win in two categories:  “Predictions,” for his suggestions about tooth regeneration and vaccines, and “Funniest,” for suggesting inclusion of a bobblehead of Dean John Valenza.

The suggestion was meant as a joke, but after the ceremony, UTSD staff member John O’Black and others wondered whether bobbleheads could be custom made. An Internet search turned up a website, and within a few weeks two “Valenza bobbleheads” arrived secretly at the school. Plotting for the big reveal began.  Read more

 

Dr. Angelov Is New Chair for Periodontics, Dental Hygiene

It was not easy to lure Nikola Angelov, DDS, MS, PhD, from a picturesque community in southern California to chair the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, but Angelov believes UTSD is a rising institution poised to achieve even greater distinction.

The commitment of the school’s leadership and faculty to become a world-class center for dental education and research makes UTSD an exciting place to be, Angelov said. UTSD is not afraid of ambitious goals, and the periodontics and dental hygiene programs are aiming for national prominence, he added.  Read more

 

UTSD Resident Wins Pediatric Research Poster Prize

Brett Chiquet, DDS, PhD, a pediatric dentistry resident at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, has won first place at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s research poster contest.   

Chiquet, a second-year resident, presented “WNT Pathway and Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip and Palate” for AAPD’s research poster competition during the organization’s annual session May 23-26 in Orlando.  Read more

 

UTHealth Alumna Named First Permanent Dean at University of Utah School of Dentistry

University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) alumna Rena N. D’Souza, DDS, MS, PhD, has been selected as the first permanent dean of the University of Utah’s new School of Dentistry. She will assume her new role on Aug. 1, pending approval by the university’s board of trustees.   

D’Souza is a professor and former chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Baylor College of Dentistry. She received a bachelor of dental surgery degree from the University of Bombay in 1977 and completed a general practice residency. She earned her DDS and MS degrees in 1985 and a PhD in 1987, all from UTHealth. Read more
