UTSD Helps Launch Nigeria’s First Endodontics Department

Dental patients in Nigeria getting root canals can thank The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston and the International Federation of Endodontic Associations for helping to launch central Africa’s very first clinical Department of Endodontics at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin City.

The collaboration between UT School of Dentistry and the University of Benin, a major university in southern Nigeria, started in 2010 when UTSD Department of Endodontics Chair Samuel Dorn, DDS, was also chair of the federation’s International Education Committee. Dorn is currently president-elect of the IFEA.

As part of the federation’s mission to start endodontics programs in developing countries that lack them, Dorn identified a need in Nigeria and the surrounding region. Although central Africa has several dental schools, none has a department of endodontics. Read more

 

Got a Dirty Dog? Spring Fling Dog Wash Is for You

UTSD students, residents and faculty will be among the volunteers at the Scrub-a-Dub Dog Wash fundraiser Sunday, April 28 in Houston.

University of Texas School of Dentistry students, residents and faculty volunteers will once again team up with Scrub-A-Dub Dog Wash and the University of Houston Pre-Veterinary Society for the “Spring Fling Dog Wash Fundraiser” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 28 at Scrub-A-Dub Dog Wash#1, 3433 W. Holcombe in Houston. 

Donations will benefit Project Rusty, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing the abandonment and needless euthanasia of dogs by providing rescue organizations, shelters, and the public with free educational resources on positive behavior management. Read more

 

DDS Class of 1963 Meets for Reunion

Alumni from The University of Texas Dental Branch’s Class of 1963 gathered for their 50-year reunion in April, and for many it was their first time touring the now-renamed “School of Dentistry’s” new building.

Thirty-two graduates out of about 50 surviving alumni from that class attended the April 5 reunion. A reception at the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center and a tour of the school’s new state-of-the-art facilities were followed by a dinner party at the Bellaire home of William “Bill” Watkins, DDS, and his wife Elena.

The alumni reminisced about old times, especially shared memories of particularly grueling years at dental school, Watkins said.  Read more
