UTSD Alumna Honored for Operation Smile Leadership

Amal Sharaiha, DDS

The founder of Operation Smile Jordan is Amal Zureikat Sharaiha, DDS, a 1982 graduate of UTSD's postdoctoral periodontics program. She has won an international award.

A 1982 postgraduate periodontics graduate of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston has been honored by the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) for her trailblazing professional and philanthropic achievements, including founding Jordan’s branch of Operation Smile in 2003.

Amal Zureikat Sharaiha, DDS, received the “Women Who Make a Difference” award at the IWF’s annual gala late last year. Her story is available online through “Periospectives,” the magazine of the American Academy of Periodontology.  Sharaiha has been a diplomate of the Academy since 1988. Read more

 

Dr. Terry Donates Esthetic Dentistry Textbooks

University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston alumnus Douglas Terry, DDS ’78, has donated two copies of his newly updated textbook, “Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry,” to the school’s library. 

Terry co-authored the 700-page book, which details procedures, techniques and materials used in aesthetic dentistry. The richly produced, coffee-table-sized work includes hundreds of color illustrations and photos. It covers the latest, evidence-based concepts and materials as well as detailed step-by-step illustrations of everyday clinical procedures. Read more

 

Carus Dental Creates New Dental Hygiene Scholarship

Carus Dental, a large multi-office dental practice, recently endowed a new scholarship for dental hygiene students at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.

The scholarship, to be awarded on academic merit, complements the scholarship for dental students Carus endowed in 2008. Five UTSD dental alumni currently work at Carus, including general dentists Candy Rodriguez, DDS ’06; Chip Silvertooth, DDS ’98; Cathy Tran, DDS ’01; Michael Jacques, DDS ’04 and oral surgeon Kacey Howell, DDS ’06.  Read more
