Alumni Gift 'SimMan®' Creates Realistic Emergencies

A high-fidelity simulation mannequin that can speak, cough and even snore is part of The University of Texas School of Dentistry’s new, state-of-the-art facility for testing dental students and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) residents by simulating real-life medical emergencies.

Devices inside SimMan® and the accompanying equipment can be programmed to exhibit various vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure and respirations. The mannequin can complain of chest pains, make wheezing noises to mimic breathing problems, and can be hooked up to intravenous or breathing tubes. Read more

 

Students Showcase Research at UTSD's 2013 Table Clinics

Almost three dozen students and residents at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston unveiled their research projects Feb. 14 at the school’s annual Student Table Clinics.

The event serves as a dry run before the students present their projects at the Star of the South Dental Meeting in March, said the event’s faculty sponsor, Stephen Laman, DDS, assistant professor in the Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health. 

“I want the whole school to see what these students are doing,” Laman said. “They take on these research projects in addition to all the regular work they have to do, so we want to showcase them to the rest of the school.” Read more

 

Two Chosen for 2013 ADEA Leadership Program

Two rising faculty members at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, Assistant Professor Ana Neumann, DDS, PhD, and Director of Informatics Muhammad Walji, PhD, have been selected as fellows for the 2013-14 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Leadership Institute.

Walji is also an associate professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences. Neumann is an assistant professor in the Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health.  They will join other ADEA fellows from around the country for leadership and administrative workshops during the coming year. The fellows will learn about policy issues affecting dental education and will strategies for decision-making, setting priorities and conflict resolution. Read more

 

Nanotechnology, Tissue Engineering Experts Speak at UTSD

The University of Texas School of Dentistry, the Houston Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR), and the Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics (HCBB) co-sponsored a well-attended continuing education course for faculty at the school on Feb. 18:  “An Introduction of Nanomedicine and Its Application in Tissue Engineering,” presented by Mauro Ferrari, PhD, and Ennio Tasciotti, PhD.

Ferrari is president and CEO of The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI) and holds the Ernest Cockrell Jr. Distinguished Endowed Chair. In addition to many titles and accolades, he holds professorships at UT Health Science Center at Houston, UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Rice University. Read more

Students and faculty from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry were among the presenters at the Houston Hispanic Forum’s Career and Education Day on Feb. 9. The annual event drew more than 20,000 local middle and high school students to the George R. Brown Convention Center.

The students learned about various career and education paths, as well as scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and met with representatives of universities, community colleges, corporations and professional associations. Read more
