The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry has teamed up with Texas Children’s Health Plan to bring dental services to The Center for Children and Women at 700 N. Sam Houston Parkway West. Later this year, they’ll do it again in Southwest Houston, opening a similar clinic at the Southwest Corporate Center near U.S. Highway 59 South and Bissonnet Street.

The Center for Children and Women is a busy parent’s dream clinic: Open seven days a week with extended hours, offering pediatric and obstetric medical care, pharmacy, lab, vision services, speech therapy, behavioral counseling and dental care all under one roof. It’s close to Beltway 8, I-45 North and the Grand Parkway, and parents can rest easy knowing the names behind the initiative have a reputation for quality.

At the Sept. 17 ribbon-cutting of the Greenspoint location, School of Dentistry Dean John Valenza, DDS, and Texas Children’s Health Plan President Christopher Born spoke of the many ways the venture benefits patients, students and the greater community. Years of planning and preparation were required before the vision could become a reality.  Read more

Grant Funds Biomimetics Study of Fluorescence

Dr. Aleksander Aleksic

Spectroscopy expert Aleksander Aleksic, PhD, of the Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics is studying fluorescence of dental materials and natural teeth.

Using new grant-funded, high-tech equipment, The University of Texas School of Dentistry’s Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics hopes to shed new light on the role of fluorescence as an attribute of appearance in dentistry.

“The goal is to make material with the same optical properties as teeth ... and one optical property is fluorescence,” said HCBB Research Associate Aleksander Aleksic, PhD. “But it’s tough to find out how much fluorescence influences the appearance of natural and artificial teeth, and dental materials.”

The HCBB recently received $100,000 from Procter & Gamble for a research project called “Evaluation of Fluorescence of Hard Dental Tissues and Dental Materials.” HCBB Director Rade D. Paravina, DDS, PhD, said the funds covered the cost of a modular QuantaMaster 400 fluorescence spectrofluorometer from Photon Technology International and will support additional research for one year. Read more
