Wednesday, August 13, 2014 - 1:25pm

Dr. Joe Ontiveros spoke at the recent IADR General Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.

Dr. Joe Ontiveros was a keynote speaker at the International Association for Dental Research General Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa earlier this summer.

Joe C. Ontiveros, DDS, MS, of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston delivered the keynote address for the Dental Materials 11: Color and Appearance (Esthetics) group at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) General Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa in June.

In describing his presentation, he wrote, “Tooth whitening has served the dental profession well for more than 120 years and has become very popular within the past 25 years. However, the documentation of complex interactions of photochemistry and its role in enhancing or accelerating the whitening process is still not well understood.

“In this presentation, the controversy over whitening teeth with adjunct light will be reviewed with relevance to clinical and in vitro research. The potential variability in research outcomes as associated with the type of bleaching agent, light source and corresponding methods will be reviewed. New visual and instrumental color measuring tools and color verification techniques will be contrasted.

“With the introduction of new light sources and improved modalities for color measurement and shade monitoring, consideration for interpreting previous and designing future research will be discussed in light of new guidelines by both ISO and ADA.”

Ontiveros is head of the Oral Biomaterials Division of the Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics.

The IADR is a nonprofit organization with more than 11,500 individual members worldwide, dedicated to: (1) advancing research and increasing knowledge for the improvement of oral health worldwide, (2) supporting and representing the oral health research community, and (3) facilitating the communication and application of research findings.

The 2014 IADR General Session and Exhibition, held in conjunction with the IADR Africa/Middle East Regional Meeting, was the first to be held on the African continent.
