The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry was among the sponsors of the Oral Cancer Foundation Awareness Walk Houston in Memory of Nathan Hart Oct. 12 at Stude Park.  Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences Department Chair Kalu Ogbureke, BDS, DMSc, JD, and Clinical Assistant Professor Yasmine Haddad, DDS, PhD, coordinated the dental school’s participation.

Fourteen volunteers from the School of Dentistry provided 62 free oral cancer screenings at the event, and many students, faculty and staff members also participated in the 5K walk.

Featured speakers included Randal Weber, MD, chair of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center;  Mark Chambers, DMD, chief of the Section of Oral Oncology and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics at MD Anderson; and oral cancer survivor Eric Statler, who is also director of strategic partnerships for the Oral Cancer Foundation.

The Oral Cancer Foundation is a national public service, non-profit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and patient support activities. Oral cancer is the largest group of those cancers which fall into the head and neck cancer category.
