University of Texas School of Dentistry Assistant Professor Gisela Velasquez, DDS, MS, has been selected as one of four recipients for the American Dental Education Association/Academy for Academic Leadership Faculty of Color Tuition Scholarship for Professional Development for the ADEA/AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning — the premier teacher-training program for full- and part-time dental and dental hygiene educators, and private practitioners embarking on new careers in academia.
The scholarship provides a full waiver of the $4,950 tuition for the program, which is offered in two phases in August and October in Atlanta, Ga.
Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, congratulated Velasquez on the award and thanked her for representing UTSD. She is a member of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and currently serves as interim clinical director of predoctoral pediatric dentistry.
Velasquez earned her dental degree in 1998 at the National Autonomous University of Honduras, followed by a postgraduate certificate in pediatric dentistry from Universidad de Chile Escuela de Graduados in Santiago, Chile. She went on to earn a master of science degree and postgraduate certificate in pediatric dentistry from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2005 and 2008, respectively.
