Five members of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston faculty have successfully completed the 2013 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Summer Program for Emerging Academic Leaders, held this year in Kennebunkport, Maine, while two department chairs, Drs. Gary Badger and Kalu Ogbureke, completed ADEA’s Chairs and Academic Administrators Management Program (CAAMP) for managers in Atlanta, Ga.

The five in the Emerging Academic Leaders Program included Dr. Bhavini Acharya of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry;  Joanna Allaire, RDH, MDH, Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene; Dr. Amity Gardner, Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health; Dr. Ariadne Letra of the Department of Endodontics; and Dr. Gisela Velasquez, Department of Pediatric Dentistry.

The Emerging Academic Leaders Program is designed for junior faculty members and covers such topics as leadership styles, team building and time management that are essential to planning and implementing a successful academic career. The five faculty members thanked Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, for authorizing their participation after they were nominated by their department chairs, who included Drs. Gary Badger, Robin Weltman and Sam Dorn.

In the same month, Badger and Dr. Kalu Ogbureke attended the ADEA/AAL Chairs and Academic Administrators Management Program -- a practical, hands-on, interactive experience that develops the core competencies required for effectively managing an academic department.

Badger is chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, while Ogbureke is chair of the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences at the School of Dentistry.
