A team of University of Texas School of Dentistry dental hygiene students won first place in the table clinic at the Texas Dental Hygienists’ Association Student Annual Session Feb. 2-4 in San Marcos, another student won a scholarship and yet another drew praise for creating a video about the school’s dental hygiene program. They were among 57 UTSD students who represented the school at the annual meeting.

Jessica Blackman, Jackie Ross, Susan Peguero and Kara Glowczwski won first place for their table clinic "Third-Hand Smoke." Their faculty sponsor was Victoria Patrounova, RDH, MHA.  Thao Katherine Nguyen was awarded the Omega Scholarship of Excellence for her participation in Student Chapter of ADHA, community service activities and academic excellence. The table clinic featured 13 presentations, including four from UTSD.

Video presentations from Texas dental hygiene schools highlighted the opening ceremonies, and senior dental hygiene student Katherine George created the video that highlighted the UTSD Dental Hygiene Program. The video was also shown at the Greater Houston Dental Hygienists’ Society meeting in February and got high praise and a round of applause from local hygienists.

UTSD Dental Hygiene Program Director Jayne McWherter, RDH, MEd said the TDHA Student Annual Session “gave students an excellent opportunity to share ideas about the dental hygiene profession, learn about their professional organization, and interact with students from other schools.”

They also heard valuable tips regarding the interview process and met with American Dental Hygienists’ Association President Pamela Quinones.
