University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, has confirmed that the school will increase DDS class enrollment from the current 84 to 100 beginning with the August 2012 incoming class. Total dental enrollment will grow from 336 to 400 students. UTSD also has 80 students in the Dental Hygiene Program and approximately 100 residents in eight postgraduate programs.
“With this increase, we’re keeping our promise and meeting the expectation that went along with the commitment from the state of Texas, UT System and UT Health Science Center at Houston for the new building,” Valenza said. “The goal is for UTSD to address the dental workforce shortage in Texas -- especially given the population growth projected for our state in the years and decades ahead.”
Valenza noted that the increase puts additional demands on UTSD personnel, “so we’ll be doing all we can over the next four years to add the needed faculty and staff as we grow,” he said.
UT School of Dentistry will move to a new, $155-million facility in May. The 314,000 square foot building and conference center will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and room to grow as UTSD takes on new challenges. |
